Ryan accepts briefs for the prosecution and defence in criminal and quasi-criminal matters, including regulatory matters.
Prior to signing the bar roll, Ryan was a solicitor between 2011 and 2025.
Between 2019 and 2025 Ryan managed the County Court Appeals and Contraventions division of the Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) where he led a team of 20 solicitors who prepared and prosecuted appeals from the Magistrates’ Court and Children’s Court to the County Court, as well as contravention of Community Correction Order (CCO) hearings in the County Court and Supreme Court. Ryan appeared as a solicitor-advocate in appeals and contraventions and took a proactive approach to resolution. Also in that role, Ryan provided advice to the Director of Public Prosecutions and external agencies such as Worksafe Victoria on the prospects of Director’s appeals.
Between 2015 and 2019 Ryan worked as the Senior Administrator of the Criminal Division in the County Court of Victoria with the Honourable Chief Magistrate Justice Hannan, who at the time was Head of the Criminal Division of the County Court. Ryan worked on policy and court administration with a focus on efficient case management and reducing court delay.
Between 2011 and 2015 Ryan worked as a solicitor at the OPP where he practiced in general crime, drug offences, sexual offences, appeals, and worked on regional circuits.
Ryan has a Bachelor of Arts with Honours (Criminology) from Monash University and a Juris Doctor from RMIT University.
Ryan is reading with Alexander Patton and his senior mentor is Jason Gullaci SC.
