Damien Hannan is a highly experienced criminal barrister with an exceptional track record in trial work. With over 23 years of practice in criminal law, Damien has conducted more than 250 criminal trials in the County Court. His extensive trial experience covers a wide range of matters including fraud, drug trafficking, sexual offences, assaults, and robberies.  Damien’s courtroom skills and deep understanding of criminal law have earned him a reputation as a formidable trial advocate.

Advice Work:

In addition to his trial work, Damien is sought after for his expertise in providing advice on criminal law matters and associated civil Confiscation Act matters.  Solicitors frequently brief him to offer valuable insights, draft submissions, and provide strategic counsel in criminal cases across all jurisdictions. Coercive Powers and Organised Crime:

In 2016, Damien was appointed as an Examiner with the Office of the Chief Examiner (Vic).  This independent statutory appointment, valid for a period of five years, demonstrates Damien’s recognised expertise in criminal law and his exceptional advocacy skills.  As the first and only sessional appointment to this position, Damien’s experience is highly regarded within the legal community.  His role as an Examiner has further enhanced his practice as defence counsel, specifically organised crime matters.

Racing and Disciplinary Proceedings:

Damien has a wealth of experience in the field of racing and disciplinary proceedings in Victoria.  Damien regularly appears before the Victorian Racing Tribunal and previously appeared before the Racing and Disciplinary (RAD) Board.  He appears in matters referred to the Tribunal by Harness Racing Victoria, Greyhound Racing Victoria, and Racing Victoria for both defendants and the Stewards.

Academic Contributions:

Beyond his legal practice, Damien Hannan has made important contributions to legal education.  He has served as a lecturer and tutor at the Gummuri Centre, Griffith University, and at Deakin University.  Damien’s academic expertise extends to various areas of law, including contract law, employment law, ethics, and administrative law.  Through his academic pursuits, Damien shares his knowledge and helps shape the next generation of legal professionals.
